Jason Weiss, a freshman tennis player at Woodland Hills Taft High, learned the hard way last week that it is against City rules to miss school and participate in a school match on the same day.

Weiss played in a tournament in San Diego last Monday and then drove to Taft’s afternoon playoff match against Pacific Palisades. He won three of four matches, lifting Taft to a 16 1/2-13 victory in the City semifinals.

But when Weiss told a newspaper reporter about his busy day, City athletic officials had to inform the school that it would have to forfeit the victory.

Palisades and University meet in the final at 2 p.m. today at the Raquet Centre in Studio City.

“It’s devastating,” said Ron Berz, Taft’s principal. “It’s very, very disheartening. It’s a tough lesson to learn.”
