Tommy Louie’s bases-loaded ground ball to shortstop scored Chris Greinke in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday to lift Irvine to a 4-3 victory over Riverside Arlington in the second round of the Southern Section Division 4-A playoffs at Irvine High.
Irvine (18-9) advances to the quarterfinals Friday at Sunny Hills, which was a 3-2 winner over Arroyo Grande.
The Vaqueros led, 3-0, through six innings, but Arlington, which finished 19-8, rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the score.
Arlington parlayed three walks and two hits, including a two-run homer by Angel Sanchez, into three runs. Josh Brizzi drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs to drive in the tying run.
In the bottom of the seventh, Chad Baker led off with a single and Greinke reached first on a fielder’s choice. Scott Seal hit a ground-rule double to right-center to put runners on second and third with one out.
Jason Minici walked to load the bases, then Louie hit a sharp grounder to short. Shortstop Brian Shearer tried to get Greinke coming home, but Greinke slid under the tag to score the winning run.
Louie, who was one for four with three runs batted in, gave the Vaqueros a 3-0 lead when he hit a two-run homer in the third. Baker led off the inning with a double and scored on an error for the first Irvine run.
Seal (3-0) came on in relief of Ryan O’Toole for the victory.
