Santa Fe Christian stunned top-seeded Holtville, 13-2, and Borrego Springs shocked No. 2 La Jolla Country Day, 6-5 in extra innings-- twice --in Friday’s semifinals of the San Diego Section 1-A baseball playoffs.

Borrego Springs won its semifinal twice , and now the Rams and Eagles will become the first 1-A teams to play for a championship in San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. The final is at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning at Point Loma Nazarene, Borrego Springs thought it had scored the winning run when it received a bases-loaded walk.

It had momentarily, but it didn’t win.

Sam Hernandez, who was on first, apparently joined in the celebration a tad early and neglected to touch second base. The first base umpire called him out a few minutes later when he and his teammates left the field.

Hernandez made up for his alleged mistake, though. His single to left in the bottom of the ninth drove in Kyle O’Brien, who went three for three, and Borrego celebrated again .

“It was weird,” said Peter Ogle, LJCD Coach. “I’ve never seen anything like it. They ran off the field so he was automatically out. Aside from the runner on third, I don’t think any one of the other runners touched (the next base).”

Earlier, LJCD (15-10) had scored three in the seventh to take a 5-4 lead, but Borrego (14-5) forced the extra innings with a run in the bottom of the seventh.

In the other semifinal at Imperial Valley College, No. 4 Santa Fe Christian (17-7) advanced to its first final with its ninth consecutive victory.

Winner Andy DeGrassie (9-2) struck out five in five innings, and A.J. Applefield (two RBIs), Steve LaPjutz and Ryan Flanders each had two hits.

Mark Rodgers and Paul Hoyt each went two for three for Holtville (17-5).
