Santa Ana to Build Aviary With Grant
The city has received a $129,000 grant from the state Department of Parks and Recreation, which will be used to create a habitat for exotic birds at the Santa Ana Zoo.
Assemblyman Tom Umberg (D-Garden Grove) presented Mayor Daniel H. Young with a check for that amount at Monday’s council meeting.
On Tuesday, zoo director Ron Glazier said the grant will be used to build a 135-foot-long, 40-foot-high free-flight aviary for South American birds through which visitors will walk.
“We’re very pleased with the grant,” Glazier said. “This allows us to build an exhibit we think the public will be very excited to see.”
The aviary will be landscaped with bamboo and built along a koi pond. Designing work will begin within a few weeks.
