800-Meter Specialist Lopez to Run for His Uncle at Glendale College

Juan Lopez, a Bakersfield North High middle distance runner, will attend Glendale College.

Lopez, who has a best of 1 minute 54.54 seconds for 800 meters, finished second in the Central Coast Section track and field championships to qualify for this weekend’s state meet.

Lopez said he chose Glendale over Western State Conference rival Bakersfield College, the four-time defending men’s conference champion, and Cal State Bakersfield to train under his uncle, Ed Lopez, the men’s cross-country and track coach at Glendale.

The L.A. Gear American Roundball Corp. has scheduled sign-ups for its 18th summer-league basketball league Saturday and Sunday starting at noon at North Hollywood High.

Sign-ups are open to boys in grades 3-12 and girls in high school and college. Sign-ups are open to teams and individuals.

Taft High will play host to its 10th golf tournament June 15 at Braemar Country Club in Tarzana. All proceeds will benefit the school’s athletic department.

Bob Farber, a senior right fielder for Cal Lutheran, was named to the College Division All-American second team by the College Sports Information Directors of America, the school announced Wednesday. Farber holds a 3.82 grade-point average. He batted .357, hit 20 doubles and drove in 30 runs.
