Both were looking for the same pitch and when they got it, Lisa Weaver and Jessica Montgomery didn’t waste the opportunity.

Weaver, a freshman designated hitter, and Montgomery, a junior first baseman, knocked in the tying and winning runs for Woodbridge to give the Warriors a 2-1 victory in eight innings over Saugus in the Southern Section 3-A softball championship game Saturday at Mayfair Park.

Woodbridge’s two offensive heroes said they were waiting for risers from Saugus right-hander Kerry Coudry (22-4). When they got them, they pounded them into the outfield.

“I was kind of worried I wasn’t going to get a good hit because I had struck out before (in the second inning),” Weaver said. “I just wanted to place the ball. I thought I was going to be out when I hit it.”

Weaver’s line drive to deep left field with two outs in the top of the fourth inning drove in shortstop Debbie Nasitka to tie the score, 1-1.

Montgomery got the game-winning RBI with two outs in the top of the eighth, knocking in pitcher Alison Ward, who had doubled to the gap in right-center moments earlier.

“I had a lot of confidence in myself,” Montgomery said. “I kind of choked when Anne Marie (Risquez) was at third (in the second inning) and I couldn’t drive her in.”

The hits were the only ones in the game for Weaver and Montgomery. But Weaver said her double is the biggest hit of her career.

“I hit a triple against University (in the semifinals) over the center fielder’s head that went for a triple and that went farther than my hit tonight, but this one was definitely more important,” Weaver said.
