Two area high school pitchers have signed contracts with the San Diego Padres and will report to a mini-camp in Scottsdale, Ariz., later this month.
Right-handers Scott Singleton of Westlake High and Matt Goebel of Royal signed over the weekend, according to Mike McClure, coach of the Westlake-Royal American Legion team. Terms were not released.
The pair were drafted after participating in a San Diego tryout last month at Jack Murphy Stadium. A third player from the region who participated in the tryout, Westlake pitcher-first baseman Rico Lagattuta, met with San Diego representatives Friday and will make a decision on whether he will sign by Monday.
Singleton and Goebel, who were drafted in an undisclosed round, will report June 19 and later will be designated for assignment. Singleton was 3-2 at Westlake with an earned-run average of 2.26. Goebel was 6-2 with a 3.28 ERA.
