PREP NOTES : McCaffrey Takes Over El Toro Baseball Again

Share

Tom McCaffrey, an assistant at El Toro for the past eight seasons, has been named to replace Dan DeLeon as the school’s varsity baseball coach. DeLeon resigned last month to pursue a career as a professional baseball scout.

McCaffrey, 45, was the team’s batting instructor and also coached the infielders. He was the school’s head coach from 1980-84 before resigning because of an illness in the family. He was also head coach at Santa Monica from 1974-79.

“I got a lot of input from the parents who felt strongly about continuity in the program, and I decided that rather than going with a new coach and a new system, I would take the job,” McCaffrey said.

El Toro will have five varsity lettermen returning, including pitcher Marc Ver Wayne and catcher Mike Lutterloh.

McCaffrey has been a business law and accounting teacher at El Toro since 1979.
