BREA — Foothill’s Melissa Wielandt had a bases-loaded single in the fifth inning and another in the seventh to give the North a 2-0 victory in the first Orange County All-Star girls’ softball game Monday at Brea-Olinda High School.
Wielandt’s clutch hitting combined with the one-hit pitching of Pacifica’s Jennifer Surface, Foothill’s Leeann Gonzalez and Fullerton’s Kathleen Kennedy.
“I never before liked pressure situations,” Wielandt said. “But recently, I started to work on them. (In the fifth inning) I was looking to make contact, any kind of contact. I got something low and inside.”
In the fifth, North catcher Kelley Green of Foothill beat out a bouncer to shortstop Jodi Bixler of Fountain Valley for an infield hit. Beth Queypo of Western followed with her first of two hits and Western teammate Sonya Fellows loaded the bases by reaching on an error.
Wielandt then slapped a single to left, scoring Green to break the tie.
In the seventh, Green walked and Queypo singled, and both advanced on Kristina Luna’s sacrifice. Wielandt then singled to right to make the score 2-0.
