Mater Dei Assistant Basketball Coach Bellomo Resigns

Phil Bellomo, Mater Dei’s highly respected assistant basketball coach the past seven seasons, has resigned, Gary McKnight, athletic director and basketball coach, said Wednesday.

Bellomo, who will continue teaching science at the school, joined McKnight’s staff as a sophomore coach nine years ago and was junior varsity coach one season before becoming offensive coordinator for the varsity.

During Bellomo’s tenure, Mater Dei won five Southern Section and two State titles. McKnight now has two assistants: defensive specialist Dave Taylor and former Monarch standout Tom Lewis, who was recently hired.

“Phil just decided it was time for a change and he wanted to pursue other activities,” McKnight said.
