CS Northridge Signs 2 for Women’s Track

Christine Burton of La Mesa Helix High and Yolanda Hopkins of Sacramento Burbank have signed letters of intent with the Cal State Northridge women’s track and field team.

Burton has personal bests of 12.15 seconds in the 100 meters, 25.13 in the 200, and 18 feet 4 1/2 inches in the long jump. She placed seventh in the long jump in the state championships but was eliminated in her qualifying heats of the 100 and 200.

Hopkins has a personal best of 42 feet 8 inches in the shotput and placed fourth in the Sac-Joaquin Section finals.

David Lowham, a four-year letterman on the Cal State Northridge men’s swimming team, has been named an at-large Academic All-American by GTE.

Lotham, a finance major, had a 3.93 grade-point average (on a scale of 4.0) during the 1991-92 school year.

Todd Biefeld of Huntington Beach has signed a letter of intent to play next season for the Northridge men’s soccer team.

Biefeld, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound fullback, played last fall at Orange Coast College and played previously at Edison High.

Justin Van Fleet of Verdugo Hills High, the runner-up in the pole vault in the 1991 City Section track and field championships, will compete for Glendale College next season, Verdugo Hills track Coach Fred Koegler said.

Van Fleet cleared a personal best of 14 feet to start his senior season, but broke a bone in his right foot while warming up for the Pasadena Games in March at Occidental College. He sat out the rest of the season.

The American Lung Assn. of Ventura County and former U. S. Ambassador R. D. Nesen will serve as hosts for the association’s third invitational golf tournament on Monday at the Sherwood Country Club.

A soccer camp, organized by the Bible Fellowship Church in Ventura, will be held at Buena High on June 22-26. The nonprofit camp will be coached by Westmont College soccer players and will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
