McMullen, Snyder Report to Minor League Teams

Two more area high school baseball standouts have signed professional contracts and have departed to begin their minor league seasons.

Rio Mesa infielder Jon McMullen, who was drafted in the eighth round by the Philadelphia Phillies, signed last week and has reported to the club’s summer Class-A affiliate in Martinsville, Va., a member of the Appalachian League. In the spring, McMullen batted .500 with seven home runs and 34 runs batted in. McMullen will play at first and third base.

Westlake High right-hander John Snyder signed Sunday with the California Angels, who drafted him in the 13th round. Snyder reported Tuesday to the club’s rookie league affiliate in Mesa, Ariz. Snyder was 6-4 for Westlake with a 1.28 earned-run average. He struck out 97 and gave up 33 hits in 60 innings.

Signing terms were not disclosed.

Dan Zorich of Moorpark College, the runner-up in the discus and hammer throw in the state junior college championships last month, has signed a national letter of intent with Fresno State.

Zorich, a 1990 graduate of Agoura High, posted personal bests this season of 182 feet 3 inches in the hammer throw, 159-5 in the discus and 51-4 1/2 in the shotput.

Tomislav Zelenovic of the Cal Lutheran tennis team has been named to the men’s NCAA Division III All-American team.

Zelenovic finished the season ranked No. 19 in singles play in Division III. He reached the third round in the Division III individual tournament last month in Atlanta. Zelenovic is a sophomore from Rijeka, Yugoslavia.

Cal Lutheran assistant athletic director Carla DuPuis has been named the women’s tennis coach, replacing Kellie Chase, who resigned after two seasons. DuPuis coached the team in 1989 and 1990.
