LOCAL NOTES : Fountain Valley Spirit Club Advances to Soccer Nationals

Stephanie Hughes scored with four minutes 47 seconds to play, giving the Fountain Valley Spirit a 1-0 victory over the Pleasanton Power in the Western Regional of the National Cup girls’ soccer tournament Wednesday at Golden, Colo.

Hughes took Michelle Kaping’s pass and scored from four yards.

Kathy Skogland made nine saves in her third shutout and the team’s fifth in six tournament matches.

The Spirit (52-3-4) won all six of its matches during the tournament, outscoring its opponents, 19-2.

Fountain Valley advances to the national championship July 25-28 in Virginia.

Tiger Woods of Cypress shot a second round 70 to take a one-shot lead in the Mission Hills Desert junior tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Assn. in Rancho Mirage.

Woods has a two-day total of 142, a shot better than Palm Desert’s Michael Walton. Gilberto Morales of Venezuela, the first-day leader, shot 81 and is at 152.

Chris Berry of Yorba Linda shot 76 for the second consecutive day.

In the girls’ division, Kellee Booth of Coto de Caza shot a 72 and has a two-day total of 150, two behind leader Emilee Klein of Studio City. Eunice Choi of Laguna Hills shot a second-round 80 and is at 157.

Al Howie moved to a 38-second lead over Helmut Schieke on Wednesday’s 28.5-mile stage of the Runner’s World Trans America Footrace.

James Edmonson of Los Angeles won the stage from Ludlow to Amboy, Calif., in 3 hours 55 minutes 3 seconds, about 13 minutes ahead of Howie, 46, from Scotland. The runners have covered 215.4 miles since leaving Huntington Beach on their way to New York.

Edmonson moved into third place overall, 1:44.37 behind Howie. David Warady of Huntington Beach (3:27:00 behind) moved into fourth.

John Hangartner has been named Magnolia High’s varsity baseball coach, the school announced. He replaces John Sharpe, who resigned after last season.

Hangartner, a Magnolia and Cal State Long Beach graduate, is the son of the late John Hangartner, who was a football coach at Kennedy.

Kevin McCarthy, an assistant track and field coach at UC Irvine the last seven years, was named men’s track and field and cross-county coach at Cal State Los Angeles.
