Crescenta Valley Swingman Signs With CSUN for Basketball

Josh Willis, a 6-foot-6 swingman from Crescenta Valley High, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Cal State Northridge next season.

Willis averaged 24 points and 7.2 rebounds a game during his senior season to earn All-Pacific League honors.

He also played on the Falcons’ baseball team, batting .384 with seven doubles and 11 runs batted in.

High school players from 29 schools will be represented in the Burbank-Glendale all-star football game Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Sylmar High.

Among those representing Sylmar on the West team are running back Tobaise Brookins, receiver Brian Roberson and quarterback Ryan Walker. Also scheduled to play for the West is Alemany receiver Richard Dice.

The East features running back Pathon Rucker of Glendale. The West is coached by Fred Cuccia of Poly and the East is coached by Ken Gerard of Marshall.

Shelby Wilcox, a catcher from Clovis High, has signed a letter of intent to play softball for Cal State Northridge.

Wilcox, who also played soccer and volleyball at Clovis, was selected the North Yosemite League most valuable player this spring after batting .452 with 30 RBIs, 28 runs and 21 stolen bases.

Campbell Ilfrey of Plano, Tex., has signed a letter of intent to play soccer next season at Cal State Northridge.

Ilfrey, a 5-10 midfielder who was team captain for Plano East High, is the fourth high school senior to sign with the Matadors.

Stacey Jellen of Calabasas fell to Anne Mall of Laguna Niguel, 6-2, 6-3, Monday in the Southern California girls’ 18-year-old division in the sectional championship at Los Caballeros Racquet and Sports Club in Fountain Valley.

Two other area players lost in age-group finals. Geoff Abrams of Newport Beach defeated Bob Bryan of Camarillo, 6-0, 6-1, to win the boys’ 14 singles title, and Kristina Triska of Mission Viejo defeated Jessica Kessler of Studio City, 6-2, 6-2, to win the girls’ 14 singles title.

The sectionals play a large factor in the upcoming SCTA rankings, which determine which players advance to the USTA junior nationals.

The top eight ranked players, of which Mall and Jellen are expected to be included, advance to the nationals in San Jose in August.

Kenji Mochizuki has been hired as football co-coach at University High.

Mochizuki, who coached Van Nuys from 1987-91, will be the defensive coordinator and share the head coaching job with Brad Ratcliff, who will run the offense.
