Team L.A. Roster Includes 2 Morningside All-Stars

Morningside High basketball players Stais Boseman and Cory Saffold will compete for Team Los Angeles at the ninth annual L.A. Gear Slam-N-Jam National Invitation Tournament Saturday through Thursday at Cal State Long Beach.

The tournament will feature 44 prep all-star teams from 23 states and Canada.

“This is by far the most competitive field we’ve had in nine years,” tournament director Issy Washington said.

Team Los Angeles, which is seeded third behind the Louisiana Spartans and New York City Riverside Church, will open pool play against San Fernando at 6 p.m. Saturday and is scheduled to play Seattle BCI at 4:40 p.m. Sunday and Portland at 7:40 p.m. Monday.

The championship game is scheduled for 8:40 p.m. Thursday.

Boseman and Saffold are both coming off outstanding junior seasons.

Boseman, a 6-foot-4 guard, averaged 18 points to lead the Monarchs to their first State Division III title; Saffold, a 6-7 forward, was one of the team’s top front-line players with a 10.1-point scoring average. Boseman was named California state player of the year and Saffold was an All-Southern Section selection.

Jessica Reifer, who helped lead the Torrance High girls’ soccer team to an undefeated season and Southern Section 3-A Division title as a senior last season, has been named to the Olympic Development Program’s under-19 West Regional team for the second consecutive year.

Reifer, a forward, was the leading scorer for the Tartars and was selected 3-A offensive player of the year.

She will attend the University of Hartford in Connecticut in the fall.

Many of the top players in the nation will participate in the Olympias Girls Development League’s second annual National Women’s Invitational Basketball Tournament from Tuesday through July 25 at Harbor College in Wilmington.

Among the standouts expected to compete in the high school tournament are Tina Thompson of Morningside and Joi Turner of St. Bernard. The tournament will also include teams from San Diego and Bakersfield, as well as Arizona, Iowa, Colorado and Washington.

Tournament play starts at 10 a.m. Tuesday and the championship game is scheduled for 8 p.m. on July 25.

Admission is $3 for adults or $2 for students with identification. Weekly passes are $10 for adults, $8 for students.

Cal State Dominguez Hills will hold its Toro Summer Baseball Camp for youths ages 8 to 16 from July 27-30 in Carson.

The camp instructors will include Dominguez Hills pitching coach John Verhoeven, a former pitcher with the Angels and Minnesota Twins, and Dominguez Hills Coach George Wing.

A T-shirt and a video analysis are included, at a cost of $60 for registration prior to the first day of camp and $75 for first-day registration.

The 31st annual Chevron Manhattan Beach Grand Prix, one of the nation’s oldest bicycle races, will be held Aug. 2 at Live Oak Park in Manhattan Beach.

The nine United States Cycling Federation races in the event will offer a total purse of $14,500. There will also be 20 races in the Community Division for all ages.

Registration is under way for a basketball camp for boys and girls ages 10 to 15 at Rogers Park, 400 W. Beach Ave., Inglewood.

Registration is from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the park.

Camp dates are July 27 for girls and July 28 for boys.

Men and women will compete in the Mr. and Mrs. Inglewood Bodybuilding Contest at 7 p.m. July 25 at Darby Park, 3400 Arbor Vitae St., Inglewood.

There will be divisions for all sizes and ability levels.

University of Arizona standouts Ed Stokes and Casey Schmidt, and twin sisters Heather and Heidi Burge from Palos Verdes High and the University of Virginia are expected to be among the coaches for the 10th annual Titan Sports Basketball Camp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 3-7 at Peninsula High.

The camp is for boys and girls ages 6 to 14.

The focus will be on individual skills and team strategy.
