LOCAL NOTES : Woods Stretches Lead to Two at Torrey Pines

Tiger Woods of Cypress, seeking a record seventh title, shot a 1-under 71 Wednesday to take a two-shot lead after the second round of the Optimist Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego. Woods led by one after the first round.

Woods, who has been fighting a cold for several days, is at five-under 139 for two rounds on the Torrey Pines South Course, two ahead of Venezuela’s Gilberto Morales in the boys’ 15-17 division. Morales shot par 72.

John Lee of Placentia is in a two-way tie for 10th, nine shots behind Woods.

Eunice Choi of Laguna Hills is third in the girls’ 15-17 division, seven shots behind Erika Hayashida of Peru.

Jin Park of Fullerton leads the boys’ 11-12 division by a shot over Alejandro Bustos of Mexico. Park, who was tied with Bustos at the start of the round, shot a three-under 54 on the 2,421-yard Singing Hills Pine Glen Course.

Brian Sinay of Irvine is in second in the boys’ 10-and-under division, six shots behind James Oh of Lakewood.

Kellee Booth of Coto de Caza won her second-round match of the Women’s Western Golf Assn. national junior championship, defeating Kim Hunt of Galesburg, Ill., 5 and 4, at Blackhawk Country Club in Madison, Wis.

Booth, who was the medalist of the qualifying round Monday, advanced to today’s quarterfinals against Jeanne Ann Krizman of South Bend, Ind. The semifinals will be played this afternoon and the final is on Friday.

Booth, whose mother, Jane Bastanchury Booth, won the tournament in 1965 and the WWGA Amateur title in 1969 and ‘70, also advanced to the quarterfinals last year.

Troy Abbey, the boys’ volleyball coach at Dana Hills High, has been named as the women’s coach at Saddleback College.

This is Abbey’s first collegiate coaching position. He coached boys’ and girls’ volleyball at Trabuco Hills High for two seasons and at Mater Dei for another. Abbey, 30, has also been involved with the California Juniors volleyball club for seven years.

Abbey succeeds Julie Sandoval, who resigned earlier this month to become an assistant coach at Cal State Fullerton.

Tom Rogozinski of Hagerstown, Md., won his second consecutive stage of the Runner’s World Trans America Footrace but cut only a half-hour off the overall lead of David Warady of Huntington Beach.

Rogozinski finished the 47.2 miles from Norton to Kensington, Kan., in 7 hours 4 minutes 22 seconds. Warady was second in 7:35:34 and leads Rogozinski by 3:17:32 after 1,473.6 miles.
