The top-seeded team of Karolyn Kirby and Nancy Reno was upset in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Women’s Professional Volleyball Assn tournament at Venice Beach.

Kirby and Reno were sent to the losers’ bracket of the double-elimination tournament after losing, 15-10, to eighth-seeded Barbara Fontana of Manhattan Beach and Deb Richardson of Santa Barbara.

Fontana-Richardson will face fourth-seeded Cammy Ciarelli and Holly McPeak in today’s winners’ bracket semifinal and Kirby-Reno will play Rita Crockett and Lori Kotas in the fourth round of the losers’ bracket.

Today’s other winners’ bracket semifinal will feature second-seeded Liz Masakayan and Linda Carrillo against sixth-seeded Patty Dodd and Elaine Roque. Dodd-Roque upset third-seeded Jackie Silva and Angela Rock in the quarterfinals.
