PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Washington to Sit Out Today

Share

Cornerback Lionel Washington, who ended his holdout Thursday, will not play during the Raider’s first exhibition, today against the 49ers in San Francisco. But Washington is expected to play next Saturday when the Raiders face the Rams at Anaheim Stadium.

Also sidelined tonight will be cornerback Sam Seale, who has a hamstring injury; fullback Steve Smith (pinched nerve) and offensive linemen Tony Rowell and James FitzPatrick (knee injuries).

Also sidelined will be Elvis Patterson, who hasn’t been in uniform since he got into a fight with defensive backfield coach Jack Stanton eight days ago.

The 49ers beat the Denver Broncos on Monday, 13-7. The 49ers’ only touchdown came on a seven-yard pass from Steve Bono to Ronald Lewis. Mike Cofer accounted for the other San Francisco points with two field goals.

Quarterbacks Jay Schroeder and Todd Marinovich will bear the brunt of the work for the Raiders, but Coach Art Shell also hopes to get Vince Evans in the game for at least a few series.

Shell also wants to take a long look at defensive backs Curtis Cotton, Derrick Hoskins, Dan Land and Torin Dorn.

And the absence of holdout defensive linemen Greg Townsend and Scott Davis will mean opportunities for Aundray Bruce, Nolan Harrison and Doug Reed.
