Marauders Hire Former CSUN Player

Perry Husband, most valauable player of the 1984 NCAA Division II World Series while at Cal State Northridge, has been hired as an assistant baseball coach at Antelope Valley College, the school announced Tuesday.

Husband, a standout player at Antelope Valley in 1981, will assist co-coaches Joe Watts and Tim Feickert. His primary responsibility will be hitting, but he also will work with infielders.

Husband played second base for Northridge from 1982-84 and was drafted in the 16th round of the June, 1984 draft by the Minnesota Twins. He played two seasons with the Visalia Oaks, a Class-A team in the California League.

As a freshman at Antelope Valley College, Husband hit safely in 32 of the Marauders’ 33 games, including 31 in a row. He batted .439 that season. In 1990, he was inducted into Antelope Valley’s Whit Carter Hall of Fame.

Husband was a three-sport standout for Quartz Hill High. As a senior in 1980, he was an All-Golden League selection in baseball and basketball and was honorable mention in football. He also was named the school’s athlete of the year.

Husband has coached the Quartz Hill American Legion team the last five years.

Kim Nellis, Tahara Martin, Mark Sinderson and Manuel Perales, four athletes who graduated from high school in June, will compete for the Antelope Valley College track and field teams next season.

Nellis won the 100-meter low hurdles and placed second in the 300 lows for Palmdale High in the Southern Section 4-A Division championships in May. She has personal bests of 14.58 seconds in the 100 lows and 44.94 in the 300s.

Martin placed fourth in the long jump for Quartz Hill in the 4-A meet and has bests of 17 feet 4 1/2 inches in the long jump and 35-5 in the triple jump.

Sinderson and Perales are from Las Vegas. In the Nevada state championships, Sinderson won the mile in 4:20.8 for Bishop Gorman High and Perales placed sixth in the 800 meters for Las Vegas High. Perales has bests of 1:54 in the 800 and 4:24 in the mile.

Chaminade High fencers won a tournament-best six medals in the California State Games last weekend in Concord.

Jeff Feinblatt, Dean Jacobberger and Wes Waldron each won two medals.

Waldron and Feinblatt won the silver and bronze medals in the men’s foil. Waldron and Jacobberger won the silver and bronze in the under-20 men’s foil, and Feinblatt and Jacobberger won the silver and bronze in the under-20 men’s epee.

The Chaminade fencers also won the national high school championship in May.
