PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Knox Looks for Consistent Pass Rush

Share

Though the Rams registered two sacks, including one in which Kevin Greene beat a double-team to get to the quarterback, Coach Chuck Knox said he would’ve liked more of a consistent pass rush Saturday night in the team’s 19-16 overtime victory over the Raiders.

“Well, I’m concerned about it,” Knox said. “But I also know that Bill Hawkins, who has been looking pretty good, didn’t play (because of a calf injury). And Jim Skow (shoulder) didn’t play, and Sean Gilbert (ankle) didn’t play.”

Knox said he didn’t know whether Gilbert, the team’s No. 1 draft pick who has missed both exhibition games, or Hawkins, who got two sacks in the exhibition opener, would be able to play Saturday against the Green Bay Packers. And he sounded dubious about the health of Skow.

He said he would like Gilbert, at least, to see some playing time during an exhibition game.

“I think it’s important, otherwise we wouldn’t have brought him to training camp,” Knox said. “He would’ve been playing, getting better, but he hurt his ankle. Now as soon as his ankle gets well, we’ll put him out there.”

Knox also sounded as if he doubted left tackle Gerald Perry, who has been limited by soreness in his knees and missed Saturday night’s game, would be ready to go this weekend.

Neither cornerback Darryl Henley nor strong safety Anthony Newman, both of whom left the game with hamstring problems, is believed to be seriously injured, Knox said Sunday. . . . Asked if he thought the prolonged negotiations to sign No. 2 pick Steve Israel have moved past the point where Israel can be a major contributor this year, Knox just shrugged: “I don’t know.”
