Alaska Collegiate Baseball Honors Mutz

Frank Mutz, pitching coach at The Master’s College the past two years, has been named Alaska collegiate manager of the year.

Cal Lutheran’s Pat Norville was named pitcher of the year after he compiled a 7-1 record and a 2.02 earned-run average for Mutz’s team, the Kenai Peninsula Oilers.

Mutz, 27, coached the Oilers to a 32-12 record and the championship of the two college summer leagues, the Alaska Central League and the Alaska League.

Mutz, who attended Granada Hills High, pitched for two years at the University of Hawaii before transferring to The Master’s.

He pitched one year for The Master’s then played four seasons in the California Angels organization. He was released in 1990.

After coaching the German national team for one season, he returned to The Master’s in 1991, where he has been working on his bachelor’s degree.

Mike Torres of Glendale College, the Western State Conference champion in the men’s javelin, has made an oral commitment to attend Cal Poly Pomona.

Torres, who placed sixth in the state championships, must complete the requirements for an Associate in Arts degree at Glendale in the fall before transferring to Pomona in the spring.

He has a personal best of 185 feet 2 inches in the javelin.

John Golden, winner of the City Section title in the pole vault for El Camino Real High in May, will attend Moorpark College.

Golden has a personal best of 14 feet 6 inches. He placed third in the City championships as a junior.

Lindsay Parker struck out 10 and walked two as Glendale Independence defeated Glasgow, Del., 5-1, Thursday in a consolation-bracket game of the Senior League Softball World Series (ages 13-15) in Kalamazoo, Mich.

The win propelled Glendale (14-3) into today’s semifinal game against Georgetown, Mich.

Glendale scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie against Glasgow.

Makenzie Mallory and Elizabeth Barnes began the sixth with consecutive bunt singles and later scored on a pair of wild pitches.

Danielle Robertshaw followed with a walk, went to second on a groundout and scored on Parker’s single.

Parker went to second on the throw home and scored on a single by Shannon Smith.
