LOCAL NOTES : Choi Wins Girls’ Junior Golf Title

Eunice Choi of Laguna Hills fired a final-round, six-over-par 78 Thursday to win the girls’ division of the AJGA Classic junior golf tournament in Ithaca, N.Y.

Choi completed the three rounds with a 14-over 230, five shots ahead of Julie Pelchar of West Lawn, Pa.

Jeffrey McGraw of Fullerton, the leader after two rounds of the boys’ 13-14 division, shot a 10-over 82 and placed second, four shots behind William Snellings of Ridgefield, Conn.

John Lee of Placentia finished in a three-way tie for 15th with a 16-over 232, 12 shots behind Joshua Cupp of Rome, N.Y.

Chenita Rogers, Valencia High’s softball coach the past two seasons, has been named an assistant coach at Cal State Fullerton.

Rogers, 26, was a first-team All-American for the Titans, helping them to the 1986 NCAA title.

Rogers succeeds Linda Shafor, who resigned to concentrate on teaching at Harbor College.

David Warady of Huntington Beach holds a lead of more than seven hours with two stages remaining in the Runner’s World Trans America footrace.

Warady finished eighth in the 49-mile stage from Kutztown, Pa., to Washington, N.J., with a time of 9 hours 31 minutes 56 seconds. He maintains a lead of 7:41:59 over Switzerland’s Milan Milanovich in the overall race.

Tom Rogozinski of Pittsburgh won the stage in 7:07:30 and trails Warady by 9:23:54.

Today’s stage will be 45.9 miles from Washington to South Orange, N.J. The race finishes Saturday in New York City’s Central Park.

The Orange County Majestics, fourth in last week’s American Softball Assn. Women’s Open National Championships, will face the California Commotion at 5 p.m. Sunday at Heritage Park in Irvine.

The Majestics’ roster includes pitcher Debbie Doom, who earned All-American honors at UCLA, and Suzy Brazney, a former Marina High standout.

The California Commotion, which finished ninth, is led by former UCLA standouts Yvonne Gutierrez, Janice Parks and Karen Walker.

Admission is free and a complimentary barbecue will follow.
