PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Alexander Among the Roster Cuts

Receiver Mike Alexander, a three-year veteran who finished last season with the Buffalo Bills, headed a list of four players who were cut Tuesday, one of several moves the Raiders made to get down to 60-player roster limit.

Others cut were linebacker Alberto White, receiver Stacey Simmons and defensive tackle Malcolm Showell.

Running back Brent Fullwood (foot injury), defensive end Walter Watts (hand) and offensive linemen James FitzPatrick and Tony Rowell (knee injuries) were put on the injured reserve list, meaning they are ineligible to return this season.

Defensive linemen Greg Townsend and Scott Davis were exempt from the Raider total because they were moved to the reserve did-not-report list. Both are under contract. Townsend has refused to play until his deal is renegotiated, but the Raiders say that there will be no renegotiation.

Davis reportedly is still trying to decide whether he wants to remain in pro football.

“You can’t have two spots open,” said Raider Coach Art Shell of the Townsend-Davis moves, “and not have the guys here to work.”

Also, defensive back Dennis Johnson was put on a reserve list for non-football injuries. He is recovering from knee surgery for an injury suffered in a Raider charity basketball game.

Running back Marcus Allen, who sat out practice Monday because of a sore foot, tested it Tuesday but found he wasn’t able to go at full speed.
