Carson Ranked No. 2 in Nation
Carson, coming off its worst season in 27 years, has been ranked No. 2 in the nation by USA Today in a preseason ranking of the nation’s top 25 prep football teams.
Carson was the only California team ranked. Berwick High of Pennsylvania was ranked No. 1.
“We feel great, it’s an honor,” said Jamelle Holieway, the former Banning High and Oklahoma quarterback who is in his first season as an assistant at Carson. “We just have to hold up to (the ranking) and get with it. We have an excellent team.”
Carson returns 12 starters from the 1991 team that finished 6-5-1 and lost in the quarterfinals of the City Section 4-A Division playoffs to Banning. It was the first time since 1980 that the Colts failed to reach a City final and was the first time they had lost five games in a season since 1965.
Carson opens the season Sept. 4, a week before most teams, with a nonleague game at Mt. Carmel of San Diego.
