Rangers Win 2nd-Round Game in Semipro Tournament, 13-2

Doug Latta, Jason Wilcox, and Steve Savage each had three hits to lead the Valley Rangers to a 13-2 victory over the Sacramento River City Rebels in a second-round game of the South Lake Tahoe Invitational semipro baseball tournament Friday.

Wilcox scored four runs, Savage drove in three, and Latta added two runs batted in for the Rangers (31-18). The game was called after seven innings because of the 10-run rule.

The Rangers’ Steve Dempsey (6-1) threw a six-hitter.

Cal State Northridge starting offensive guard Brian Hay, examined at Granada Hills Community Hospital late Monday for a possible spinal injury, returned to practice Friday and participated in a few drills. Hay suffered a lower back strain.

The United States boys’ and girls’ 14-and-under tennis teams continued their winning ways in the semifinals of the International Tennis Federation World Youth Cup on Friday in Tokyo.

The boys defeated Taiwan, 3-0. Bob Bryan of Camarillo and Geoff Abrams of Newport Beach won their doubles match, 6-4, 6-2.

In the girls’ competition, the United States defeated Germany, 3-0. Meilen Tu of Northridge defeated Adriana Barna, 6-1, 7-5.

El Camino Real High’s Justin Martin went three for four to lead the Los Angeles delegation to a 15-5 softball victory over Toronto in the gold-medal game of the Maccabi Youth Games on Friday in Baltimore.

In girls’ softball, Oakwood’s Laura Vatz doubled twice to help the L.A. delegation beat Toronto, 5-0, in the gold-medal game.
