SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Quarterback Chris Timothy passed for three touchdowns and Orange Lutheran’s defense held Southern California Christian to 83 yards as the Lancers opened the season with a 24-0 victory Saturday at Orange Lutheran.

Southern California Christian, the defending Division X champions, dressed only 15 players for the game. Running back Mike Jacot gained 70 yards rushing in 17 attempts. Orange Lutheran’s defense did not allow the Flames to cross mid-field in the second half.

After a scoreless first quarter, Timothy connected with Ken Brown on a screen pass that turned into a 91-yard touchdown play with 8:02 left in the first half. That play was the longest pass completion in Orange Lutheran’s 20-year history. The previous record of 85 yards was set in 1985 on Lmanyeo Scott’s reception of a pass from Andy Moore against Whittier Christian.

Todd Williamson’s 44-yard field goal made the score 10-0 at halftime.

“It felt good to open with such a solid effort,” Orange Lutheran Coach Tim Taube said. “Last year, we had trouble putting two good halves together. Today, we did it.”

The Lancers extended their lead with 8:35 left in the game when Timothy hit Tony Gates across the middle on a 46-yard touchdown play. That capped a seven-play drive that gave Orange Lutheran a 17-0 lead. Timothy closed out the scoring on Orange Lutheran’s next possession with a 14-yard scoring pass to Mike Madden.

“I was pleased with the way Chris found his targets,” Taube said, adding that Southern California Christian keyed on the run, which opened up the passing game. Timothy completed eight of 17 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns.

David Hwang led the Lancers’ rushing attack, gaining 70 yards in 14 carries.
