ROUNDUP : Cypress Defeats Esperanza for Valencia Volleyball Title

Led by all-tournament player Heather Lowe, Cypress beat Esperanza, 15-11, 12-15, 15-5, in the championship match of the Valencia girls’ volleyball tournament Saturday at Valencia High.

El Dorado defeated Rosary in the third-place match, and Kennedy defeated Villa Park, 16-14, 15-10 in the consolation final.

Other players voted on the all-tournament team: Heather Dowhan (Esperanza), Shannon Myrand (El Dorado), Wendy Polnaszek (Rosary), Marie Pulu (Santa Ana Valley), Brandy Smerko (Valencia).

In nonleague eight-man football:

Liberty Christian 50, L.A. Lutheran 0 (45-point mercy rule)--Gabe Baltodano scored four touchdowns and passed for two more for host Liberty Christian (1-0). Baltodano rushed for 130 yards in 13 carries, scoring on three touchdown runs.

Baltodano, who caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Carl Warmack, also threw a 31-yard scoring pass to Warmack. John Church caught two touchdown passes, including a 25-yarder from Baltodano on the Minutemen’s first possession of the third quarter.

Church’s last reception gave Liberty Christian a 50-0 lead two minutes into the second half, and officials called the game.

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Capistrano Valley 3, Woodbridge 1--Nicole Quinn had 24 kills for Woodbridge (0-2), which lost to host Capistrano Valley (2-0) 15-10, 16-14, 11-15, 16-14.

In the Desert Classic girls’ volleyball tournament:

Whittier Christian eliminated--After making it to the third round of the Desert Classic, Whittier Christian was eliminated by Grenada, 11-1, 11-8. Bethany Stidham led the Heralds with 32 kills in the tournament

In the Valencia water polo tournament:

Santa Ana Valley takes second--Santa Ana Valley lost to Montebello, 12-9, in the championship game.

Todd Wines scored a game-high five goals for the Falcons in the championship and also scored seven goals during Santa Ana Valley’s 16-4 semifinal victory over Mater Dei.

In the Ventura Buena cross-country invitational:

Overton wins--Newport Harbor’s Jared Overton won the boys’ senior division race, and Sky Peterka finished fourth to lead the Sailors to a second-place finish with 52 points at San Buenaventura State Beach.

Hart finished first in the division with 24 points. Overton finished the course in 14 minutes 51 seconds, and Peterka finished 20 seconds behind.
