Cross-country: Today’s top dual meet features a Sunset League girls’ showdown between Edison and Ocean View at 3 p.m. at Edison.
Edison, the defending State Division II champion, is led by Janna and Janndee Evans and Jeannie and Jennifer Formosa. Christie Engesser and Tayrn Lawson lead Ocean View, which is hoping for a major upset.
“It would be a nice victory,” said Engesser, second in the 800 meters at the State meet in June.
The Woodbridge Invitational, at 8 a.m. Saturday at Woodbridge, will be the first invitational for many Orange County teams.
Newport Harbor, coming off a second-place finish at the Ventura Buena Invitational, and Katella, which won the Bronco Invitational at Cal Poly Pomona, lead the boys’ entrants. Irvine figures to be the top entrant in the girls’ division.

After a long, hot summer, opening night of the prep football season is always worth the wait. We love it for all of the enthusiastic coaches and players on the sidelines, bands trying new routines and the nutty little tidbits in the game programs.
Take Tustin’s glossy program, for instance.
In the biographies of the seniors, each indicates his most admired person. Most list parents or grandparents, but one caught our eye before Tustin’s opening game against Foothill Friday night.
Reserve defensive back Kevin Cline lists . . .
Elvis, because he is the KING!
Kevin, if you never play a down this season, Elvis still loves ya, baby.

Football streaks: Esperanza, which had its Southern Section-leading 27-game winning streak stopped by Los Alamitos in the Division III title game last year, is 1-0 after a 44-0 drubbing of Santa Ana. . . . Valencia’s 38-21 season-opening victory over Villa Park extended the Tigers’ winning streak to 15, tops in the section. . . . With a 20-0 victory, Tustin shut out Foothill for the third consecutive game. The Knights haven’t scored on the Tillers since a 17-6 loss in 1989.
