Sophomore Todd Collins will replace injured Elvis Grbac at quarterback Saturday when Michigan plays to Oklahoma State at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Grbac, a senior, injured his left ankle last week in the Wolverines’ 17-17 tie at Notre Dame. The injury occurred with about 10 minutes left in the game, but Grbac continued to play.

“We’re not going to play him,” Coach Gary Moeller said. “We think it’s better to keep the ankle isolated. If everything goes well, Elvis might be able to play the following week against Houston.”

Collins, the same size as Grbac at 6 feet 5, 230 pounds, played in six games last season, completing 16 of 26 passes for 138 yards without a touchdown or interception.

Colorado quarterback Kordell Stewart, the nation’s second-leading passer, will not make the trip to Minnesota for Saturday night’s game because of a sprained left foot.

Junior Duke Tobin will make his first start since high school. He replaced Stewart in the second half of last week’s game at Baylor and completed 10 of 15 passes for 154 yards and one touchdown.

Stewart, a sophomore who has completed 37 of 53 passes for 660 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception for the 11th-ranked Buffaloes, did not practice Tuesday or Wednesday. Coach Bill McCartney has a policy of not playing a player if he doesn’t practice before Thursday of game week.
