Late Scores Give Meiss First Foothill Victory

Two touchdowns in the fourth quarter gave Foothill High and new Coach Tom Meiss their first victory of the year, 28-22, over Woodbridge in a nonleague football game Thursday at Tustin High.

With the score tied at 14, Foothill quarterback Steve Wielandt ran 35 yards down the right sideline to give the Knights a 21-14 lead with 10 minutes 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Wielandt carried 13 times for 120 of Foothill’s 282 yards. He also completed seven of 12 passes for 29 yards and a one-yard touchdown to Paul Rieseman for the first score of the game with 5:38 left in the first quarter.

Two plays after the ensuing kick, Woodbridge’s Rich Rommelfanger lost a fumble to Foothill’s Rieseman at the Woodbridge 41-yard line. Four plays later, Linus Park scored from the one with 6:39 to play in the fourth quarter.

Seven plays after the ensuing kick, Woodbridge’s Shea Stone completed a 53-yard pass to Gary Young, then completed the conversion pass to Scott Coker to trail Foothill, 28-22, with 4:17 to play.

Woodbridge’s final attempt at a tie or victory failed when Stone threw four consecutive incomplete passes in the final minutes.
