PREP FOOTBALL : Corona del Mar Scores on Final Play to Beat Marina, 20-19

Corona del Mar’s Matt Evans completed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Garth Turner on the final play of the game Friday night to give the Sea Kings a 20-19 victory over Marina at Westminster High.

Marina (0-2), dominated the second half, rallying from a 14-7 deficit at intermission to a 19-14 lead with 2:40 to play. But Evans, who completed nine of 22 passes for 152 yards, directed a 11-play, 85-yard drive to give Corona del Mar (2-0) the victory.

The Sea Kings were faced with a fourth-and-five with 19 seconds left when Evans connected with Tom Hess to keep the drive alive. Two plays later, Evans took the snap with seven seconds showing and found Turner in the corner of the end zone for the touchdown.

Marina had its opportunities to put the game out of reach earlier. With a first-and-goal from the one-yard line midway through the third quarter, the Vikings’ Tony Parrish fumbled.

After Parrish scored on a six-yard run early in the fourth quarter, Marina’s PAT attempt failed. The Vikings also threw an incomplete pass when they tried a two-point conversion after Parrish scored on a six-yard run.

Parrish, who also scored a first-quarter touchdown, finished with 76 yards in 18 carries;Marina’s John Marvos ran 16 times for 89 yards.
