El Camino 15, Rancho Buena Vista 7--A pair of blocked punts in the fourth quarter made for some anxious moments, but top-ranked El Camino got the better of a defensive struggle in Oceanside.

El Camino’s Mike Flanagan recovered a punt with 4:14 left in the game to seal the victory for the Wildcats.

Seventh-ranked RBV was kicking from its eight, the result of a pair of defensive plays that pushed the offense back from its 20. Flanagan pounced on the ball after Mike Booker blocked Robby Kielman’s punt attempt.

“We had come fairly close to blocking one before near midfield, and so when they were kicking from deep in their own territory, we sent everybody,” El Camino Coach Herb Meyer said.

Flanagan had staked El Camino to a 7-0 lead on an eight-yard run. He carried 15 times for 87 yards.

RBV tied the game with 10:21 left when Adam Hoyny blocked Josh Johnson’s punt and it was picked up by Mike Rouse.

El Camino gained 95 yards rushing and 119 passing. Trey Crayton completed 10 of 17 passes.

San Pasqual 29, Mt. Carmel 28--Chris Whyte kicked a 25-yard field goal with 1:52 remaining to lift No .8 San Pasqual at home. Trailing 28-24 going into the fourth quarter, San Pasqual scored a safety with 8:01 left, then drove to the four-yard line, took a penalty for better field position and Whyte kicked the winner. Whyte had a 36-yarder in the first quarter.

For San Pasqual (2-0), Jamon Buggs rushed times 38 times for 234 yards, and teammate DeSale Wallace carries 12 times for 159 yards, including touchdown runs of 42, 55 and 3 yards. The Eagles rushed 71 times for 364 yards.

Mt. Carmel (1-1-1) got touchdown runs of 46 and 57 yards from Marlin Carey. Damian Dolin threw touchdown passes of 56 and 57 yards.

Vista 42, Chula Vista 10--Vista’s Jeremy Sahagun blocked two punts. He returned one for a touchdown and Neil Otineru returned the other 35 yards for a touchdown. The Panthers’ Dan Sears ran for 69 yards on 13 carries, Josh Chamberlain had 63 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries and Bryan Cox’s only completed pass went for 69 yards and a touchdown to Chris Martinez. Vista improved to 2-0. Chula Vista fell to 0-1-1.

Julian 52, Capistrano Valley 18--Frankie Stewart had 183 yards in total offense, including touchdowns on a 62-yard kickoff return and a 33-yard punt return and 12-yard run. Fullback Cory Burnett ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries for Julian (2-0). Capistrano Valley fell to 1-1.

Kearny 21, Bonita Vista 6--James Curtis rushed 23 times for 287 yards and three touchdowns, and picked up another 61 yards on kickoff returns for Kearny (1-1) at Mesa College. The Komets had 344 yards in total offense to 144 for Bonita Vista (1-1).

Orange Glen 35, Escondido 7--Juaquin Randall scored on runs of 53, 1 and 4 yards to lead No. 4 Orange Glen (2-0). Escondido quarterback Mike Frank completed 11 of 16 passes for 69 yards, scored on a three-yard run and even kicked the point after, but the host Cougars dropped to 0-2.

Fallbrook 35, San Marcos 0--The No. 9 Warriors (2-0) got a big game from quarterback John Dutton, who completed 11 of 17 passes for 195 yards, had two passing touchdowns and one rushing. Dutton hit Mike Chaiarella (2-116 receiving) with a 65-yard scoring pass to open a 28-point third quarter. He capped it with a 22-yarder to Eli Cecil. Dutton also had a six-yard scoring run in the third quarter. Tommy Hoff (12-65 rushing) and Tim Pearson also had TD runs.

Coronado 27, Hoover 6--Running back Chad Walery rushed 18 times for 136 yards and a 14-yard touchdown to lead the Islanders (1-1), who limited the Cardinals (0-2) to 159 yards total offense. Seventy-five Hoover yards came on one play, a scoring pass from Anthony Hardy to Nigel Charles. Hoover lost five fumbles. Ledge Hakes scored twice, on a nine-yard reception and a seven-yard run.

Grossmont 15, Valhalla 7--Andy Herbert threw for 89 yards on 14 of 23 passing, including a 38-yard-touchdown pass to Jon Heinrichs, and Adam Villaescusa ran for 68 yards and a touchdown on eight carries for Grossmont (2-0). Jared Andrus had 98 yards in returns and added six tackles for the Foothillers. Valhalla fell to 0-2.

Mira Mesa 25, Hilltop 6--Mira Mesa (2-0) piled up more than 400 total yards as quarterback Mike Nelson completed 10 of 16 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for another score on an eight-yard run. Hilltop fell to 0-2.

Marian 20, Mar Vista 12--Israel Gonzalez recovered a fumble and ran it back 69 yards and Jeremy Wright kicked two field goals and two extra points for Marian (2-0). Mar Vista fell to 1-1.

Carlsbad 20, Lincoln 14--Fullback Matt Olney was the only one for Carlsbad--scoring all three Lancer touchdowns. He ran for 85 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries and caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Eric Garcia. Shane Cartwright also ran for 85 yards on eight carries for Carlsbad (1-1). On defense, middle linebacker Taffi Mauga had seven tackles, two sacks, a blocked pass and a forced fumble and free safety David Corona had a late interception that stopped a Lincoln drive. Darren Hall scored one of Lincoln’s touchdowns on a 60 yard-run.

Granite Hills 23, Santana 20--The Eagles (1-1) halted the Sultans’ late comeback bid when Brian Smith intercepted a pass with less than a minute left. Santana (1-1) had scored on a long drive earlier in the fourth quarter.

Oceanside 19, San Dieguito 14--Quarterback John Portugal scored on touchdown runs of two and three yards and was six for 19 for 86 yards and threw one touchdown as the Pirates improved to 1-1. Oceanside’s Anthony Dennis rushed 13 times for 70 yards.

Southwest 28, West Hills 7--Danny Lim rushed 18 times for 85 yards and two touchdowns, and O’Brian Woods passed for 262 yards and two touchdowns to lead Southwest (2-0).

Sweetwater 14, Las Vegas Basic 7--Senior Josh Driggs rushed 21 times for 229 yards and a 75-yard touchdown to lift Sweetwater (2-0). Driggs has rushed 42 times for 412 yards in two games. Sweetwater fumbled three times inside the 20-yard line, and lost the shutout with 45 seconds left on a 28-yard pass play.
