If the San Francisco 49ers ever think about moving, maybe they should consider the Meadowlands.

The 49ers won, 31-14, for the second time in three weeks at Giants Stadium Sunday when they took a 31-0 lead and went on to rout the New York Jets. In the season opener, the 49ers beat the Giants by the same score.

Still, the 49ers don’t sound as if they want to call the place home.

“I hate playing here,” Jerry Rice said after catching five passes for 73 yards and a touchdown. “The fans have so many names for you. One guy told me he hopes I break my neck today. The fans are really hostile here.”

Added tight end Jamie Williams: “That’s one of the few things I don’t like about playing here. It seems the people of the Meadowlands know how to cuss better than anybody. I got called some things today that I never heard in the neighborhood.”

Williams also had a touchdown reception as Steve Young threw for two scores and ran for another in the first half, when San Francisco built a 24-0 lead.

The 49ers lost receiver John Taylor, who broke his leg and will be out for at least eight weeks, and defensive end Larry Roberts tore right knee ligaments.

The 49ers (2-1) put the NFL’s most productive attack to work immediately. Young passed to Rice for 23 yards and Taylor for 19 on the play when he suffered his injury. After getting to the five, Young avoided a rush and hit a wide-open Rice in the back of the end zone for a 7-0 lead.

Young scored the 49ers’ second touchdown after some strange play-calling by Jet Coach Bruce Coslet.

The Jets (0-3) got the ball at the 49er 41 after an interference call on a punt cost San Francisco 15 yards. The Jets reached the 24, where Brad Baxter lost a yard on third-and-five. Rather than call on struggling kicker Jason Staurovsky, Coslet gambled, and Blair Thomas was thrown for a four-yard loss.

“We couldn’t get into a three-point contest with them,” Coslet said. “It was our game plan going in to go on most fourth downs.”

Young connected with Mike Sherrard on a 47-yard pass play, leading to Young’s 10-yard scramble for a touchdown.
