St. Genevieve Baseball Coach Smith Resigns

St. Genevieve High baseball Coach Scott Smith has resigned, Athletic Director Richard Fong announced Thursday.

Smith, 42, said he wanted to spend more time with his family.

“My wife’s real excited,” Smith said. “I have three kids and (coaching baseball at St. Genevieve) took a lot of time.”

Smith coached at St. Genevieve for seven years, including the last three seasons with the baseball team. He posted a 21-29 overall record, 5-25 in the San Fernando League.

Smith also coached varsity basketball for three seasons and junior varsity baseball and junior varsity basketball for one year each. He plans to continue coaching the Panorama City American Legion team.

Senior Jeremy Iaccino, the starting shortstop for the Valiants last season, said Smith’s announcement was not a surprise.

“I had a feeling just from talking to him that he was going to (resign),” Iaccino said. “It’s hard to explain (why), though. People just move on. He’s a nice guy. We’re going to miss him, but we just have to go on.”

Smith, a full-time grocery store supervisor, said the decision was not easy.

“I’ll miss the kids,” he said. “I think there’s a good group coming back this year, but it’s good that I can watch (my) kids.”

Smith is looking forward to watching his son, Josh, whom he coached at St. Genevieve, play baseball next spring at College of the Canyons.

Fong said the school is accepting applications for the position and that he hopes to name a new coach before the end of football season.
