BOXING : Mayweather Defeated by Avendano
Fidel Avendano of Mexico won a unanimous decision over former WBA junior-lightweight champion Roger Mayweather in a scheduled 10-round super-lightweight bout Monday night at the Forum.
Avendano, of Acapulco, floored Mayweather, an ex-WBC super-lightweight champion, with a left hook with 20 seconds left in the fifth round. Mayweather, of Las Vegas, barely got off the canvas by the mandatory eight-count and was saved by the bell.
Mayweather finished strong but it was too late. Judge Lou Moret scored it 96-93 for Avendano, while Lou Filippo had it 95-93 and Larry Rozadilla scored it 95-94.
