Los Alamitos Coach John Barnes’ 100th victory came with such ease--42-0 over Torrance Bishop Montgomery Thursday night--that the public address announcer couldn’t even wait until the game ended to tell the crowd at Gahr High School.

With 6 minutes 18 seconds left, the PA broadcast congratulations. Barnes is 100-45-5 in his 14th year at Los Alamitos.

“It really does mean a lot to me,” Barnes said. “It also means you’re old, and you’ve been around a long time and had a lot of good players and a lot of good assistant coaches.”

Among the best players Barnes has had in recent years is current quarterback Tim Carey. Carey, a senior who led the Griffins (4-0) to a Southern Section title last season, completed 17 of 23 passes for 270 yards and three touchdown Thursday.

All three scoring passes, of 11, 11 and 13 yards, were to standout wide receiver George Sagen. Sagen finished with seven catches for 117 yards.

Don Ruberio had four catches for 71 yards, and Brad Melsby added four for 62 yards.

It was obvious early that Los Alamitos was in for a good night when the Griffins fumbled twice on the opening drive but recovered each time. They went on to score on a two-yard dive by Jake Beeney.

Los Alamitos led, 14-0, at the end of the first quarter and scored three more times in the half--on an 11-yard run by Clay Kemp, a 47-yard run off a draw play by Ben Ortega and an 11-yard pass from Carey to Sagen--to make it 35-0.

Bishop Montgomery is 1-1-2.
