Quarterback David Kreider scored all 13 points, including a one-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter as Canoga Park High stunned heavily favored Poly, 13-12, in a Valley Pac-8 Conference opener Friday night at Poly.
Kreider kicked the game-winning conversion and also booted field goals of 32 and 20 yards to lead the upset.
With Canoga Park (3-1) trailing, 12-6, midway through the fourth quarter, the Hunters tackled Poly punter Jose Ruiz at the Parrot three-yard line to set up Kreider’s sneak.
After Canoga Park took a first-quarter lead on Kreider’s 32-yard field goal, Ron Botley returned the kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown. But a penalty on the successful PAT forced Poly (3-1, 0-1) to kick again. The second attempt was blocked.
Botley was held to nine yards in five carries in the first half and fumbled once. In the second half, however, he rushed 15 times for 93 yards, including a third-quarter, 14-yard touchdown run that gave Poly a 12-6 lead.
Two minutes later, Poly blocked a Canoga Park punt and moved to the Hunters’ 14. But an apparent touchdown run by Johnnie Brown was called back on a clipping penalty. A holding penalty on the next play put Poly out of field-goal range.
With Poly trailing, 13-12, with 2 minutes 32 seconds remaining, Botley was stopped on a fourth-and-one run at the Canoga Park 43, ending Poly’s comeback hopes.
