Morse 26, Lincoln 0--With top-ranked El Camino losing, No. 3 Morse (5-0) presented its case as to why it should be the county’s No. 1-ranked team, and Conan Smith demonstrated why he is considered one of the most valuable players in the county.

The Tigers, despite a sluggish first quarter, dominated Lincoln (0-4) in front of 5,000 at Mesa College, limiting the Hornets to 84 total yards and six first downs.

Smith, a 5-foot-11, 195-pound, bruising fullback/safety, took care of the rest, scoring four touchdowns while rushing for 97 yards in 22 carries.

The four touchdowns were a personal best for Smith, who scored on runs of eight, one and eight yards and turned an interception into a 25-yard touchdown return.

“Conan’s our man,” Morse Coach John Shacklett said. “He does a great job for us. If he was just a defensive ball-player, he’d be one of the best defensive ball-players around. He does it all.

“I was trying to get him off the field today, but I couldn’t.”

Smith’s backfield mate, Archie Amerson rushed 17 times for 79 yards, and he, too, played a stellar defensive game at cornerback.
