HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Coronado Wins Tournament

Coronado High edged Dana Hills, 13-11, to win the championship of the Coronado Police Officers water polo tournament for the third consecutive year Saturday at the Coronado Municipal Pool.

Greg Finley led the Islanders with five goals, matching the number scored by Alan Herrmann. Both were named to the all-tournament team, as was Layne Beaubien of Coronado.

The Islanders splashed to an early 6-1 lead, but Dana Hills rallied to make it 8-5 at halftime. After Coronado went up 12-7, Dana Hills rallied again to pull to 12-11 with 2:15 left. Finley put the match out of reach with his fifth goal with 1:12 left.

In the third-place match, Ryan Peddycourd of Mt. Carmel scored with 1:03 left to lift the Sundevils past Goleta Dos Pueblos, 11-10.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Devin Elizondo of Mission Bay set a course record and was named the Central Park Invitational outstanding athlete as he won the meet’s Division III race.

Elizondo’s time of 14 minutes, 57 seconds over the three-mile Huntington Beach course broke the 1985 record of Saugus’ Darren Stonerock by six seconds.

Mebrahtom Keflezighi of San Diego finished second, only one second behind Elizondo.

FOOTBALL

Canoga Park Faith Baptist 65, La Jolla Country Day 16--Country Day, 20-1 over the past two seasons, fell to 0-3, losing to Faith Baptist, the No. 1-ranked eight-man team in the state last year. Mark Smith rushed for 101 yards in 14 carries for LJCD, and quarterback Chris Landry threw for 159 yards, completing eight of 23 passes.

Brethren Christian 24, Christian 9--Quarterback Jason Barron never got into a rhythm for the Patriots (0-4), going eight for 24 for 92 yards and one touchdown. He was intercepted three times.
