Pay to Play: Coach Stan Clark is wondering if the high cost of playing football at Westminster High is the reason only 39 players are participating on the varsity and junior varsity levels this season.

Prospective players were charged $330 to participate this season, according to Clark, who also serves as the school’s athletic director. Players are paying a $50 transportation fee, a $150 participation fee, $55 for a required Associated Student Body card and $75 for summer football fees.

“I hope it didn’t hurt, but I’ve heard there some kids who didn’t come out because of the fees,” Clark said. “We offered the kids some opportunities to earn the money by working a school car wash, selling program advertisements or selling Disneyland Pigskin Classic tickets.”

Previously, football funds were raised through a highly successful bingo program, but Clark said “bingo has stopped making money for us.”
