The Rialto High Knights, in their inaugural season, won their first game, 21-14, over host Burroughs in a nonleague football game Thursday night.

The winless Indians (0-6) were undone by Rialto wide receiver Jason Carnell, who blocked two punts and caught a third-quarter touchdown pass despite playing with a cast to protect a dislocated finger.

Carnell’s second blocked punt set up Bryan Rubin’s six-yard touchdown run with 23 seconds left in the first half and boosted the Knights’ lead to 13-0.

Burroughs opened the second half with a 15-play, 59-yard scoring drive, cutting its deficit to 13-7 on Jason Arnold’s four-yard pass to Tommy Varlokostas.

Rialto struck back on its next possession when quarterback Greg Ellis hit Carnell with a 31-yard touchdown pass to cap an eight-play, 80-yard drive.

Burroughs closed to 21-14 when Jimmy Thompson scored on a 44-yard run with 9 minutes 43 seconds left in the game.

Dylan Washington of Burroughs rushed for a game-high 69 yards in 21 carries.

Thompson added 64 yards in seven carries for Burroughs, which will open Foothill League play at Canyon next Friday.
