Muir’s Lack of Restraint in 41-0 Rout Irks Glendale

When the football game began Friday night, the talk on the Glendale High sideline was along the lines of “We can beat these guys!”

But as the contest wore on, the talk, what there was of it, was about pride. And revenge.

Glendale lost, 41-0, to Muir in its Pacific League opener at Glendale High. Some on the Glendale sideline felt the Mustangs were running up the score.

“I don’t think they have any class,” said senior linebacker Jaiya Figueras.

“They passed the ball with two minutes left. I think their coach (Jim Brownfield) was just trying to rub it in our faces.”

The pass in question was the only one Muir completed in the game. It was thrown by second-string quarterback Jeremy Bonwell to Kenny Haslip on fourth and seven from the Glendale 27 with 2 minutes 24 seconds to play.

The play went for a touchdown.

“I think that pass speaks for itself,” said Glendale Coach Don Shoemaker, refusing to say Muir was running up the score.

The Mustangs, led by Saladin McCullough with five touchdowns and 202 yards in 21 carries, also went for the touchdown on fourth down from the Glendale five rather than kicking a field goal with 1:12 to play in the third quarter and Muir leading by 27 points.

Running up the score or not, Muir (5-1) showed why it is the best team in the Pacific League and why it is ranked fifth in the Los Angeles area in The Times’ Top 20.

“They didn’t beat Fontana because they’ve got 11 Gumbys on the field,” Shoemaker said.

Muir gained 331 yards, compared to 122 for Glendale (5-1).

The offensive “leaders” for the Dynamiters were quarterback Ramon Jose, who completed four of 18 passes for 71 yards and James Razumich, who rushed for 36 in eight carries.

McCullough, the leading rusher in the San Gabriel Valley, helped put the game away with touchdowns on four of Muir’s six first-half possessions.

He scored on runs of three, 61, 58 and five yards before intermission and added a five-yard touchdown run in the second half.
