HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Hernandez, L.A. Baptist Rush Past Maranatha

Matt Hernandez rushed 12 times for 195 yards and two touchdowns to lead L.A. Baptist to a 33-0 victory over Maranatha in an Alpha League opener Saturday night at San Marino High.

Hernandez, a junior tailback, set a school record when he broke off a 91-yard scoring run with 9 minutes 34 seconds left in the second quarter. L.A. Baptist’s previous longest run was 75 yards by Issac Regenstrief in 1991.

Hernandez added a 15-yard touchdown run with 1:15 to play in the second quarter to give L.A. Baptist a 27-0 halftime lead.

Hernandez was not the only record-breaker for the Knights. Jeff Dibbini kicked a 51-yard field goal with 1:59 to play, setting an Alpha League mark.

Jim Romero opened the game with a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The Knights (3-3, 1-0 in league play) survived 14 penalties. Maranatha (1-5, 0-1) was held to 91 yards of total offense.
