Smerko set the Valencia single-match record for kills in Tuesday’s four-game victory over Western. It was the first time in two seasons that an Orange League opponent has won a game in a match against the Tigers. Smerko’s 31 kills broke the record of 28 she set last season in a five-game match against Sunny Hills. Smerko, who is 5 feet 9, also had 19 kills in a three-game sweep of Magnolia last week. “The biggest thing is she doesn’t make many mistakes,” Valencia Coach Dean Yoshimura said. “She only made three hitting errors in the Western match.” Smerko’s hitting percentage during the week was .609 and she added 10 blocks and seven aces. Valencia, which is shooting for its fourth consecutive league title, has won 28 league matches in a row.

Other top performers:

Karen Benkovsky, who was named most valuable player of the Brentwood volleyball tournament after leading Capistrano Valley Christian to the championship. Benkovsky had 50 kills in the tournament.

Tracy Clark, who finished third in the team sweepstakes race at the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational, finishing the three-mile course in 18 minutes 19 seconds and helping Corona del Mar to fourth place. Clark had the fastest time for a girls’ runner from Orange County.
