DIGEST : Directors Mul Auto Racing in Antelope Valley

The Antelope Valley Fairgrounds board of directors is expected to take a final vote tonight on a proposal to bring stock-car racing to the facility next season. The board will vote at the conclusion of a public hearing at 7 in the fairgrounds’ Challenger Hall at 155 E. Ave. I.

Acton-based RIZE Productions has proposed building a dirt oval track for sprint cars and street stocks. The proposal has met with mixed reactions from local residents and fairground officials. If approved, construction of the track is expected to be completed by March.

Alisha Portnoy, a former Granada Hills High standout and now a North Carolina senior, begins her quest for a second collegiate grand slam doubles championship today in the Riviera All-American tennis championships at Riviera Tennis Club. Portnoy teamed with Cinda Gurney to win the National Clay Court championships last month in Richmond, Va.

Four area high school girls’ volleyball teams will be among the 16-team field in the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions on Friday and Saturday. Nordhoff, Notre Dame, Royal and Thousand Oaks will play at Santa Barbara High and Santa Barbara City College against a field that includes many of the state’s top teams.

On Friday, Thousand Oaks will open play at 9 a.m. against defending Southern Section 2-A Division champion Arroyo Grande. At 1 p.m., Notre Dame will face Santa Barbara and Royal will take on two-time San Diego Section champion Torrey Pines. Nordhoff will go against defending state Division I champion El Toro at 3 p.m. All first-round matches are at Santa Barbara High.

Dana Ridenour, a former Sylmar High pitching standout, has signed with the Colorado Rockies, one of two National League expansion teams scheduled to begin play in 1993.

Melissa Patterson of Malibu set a women’s course record of 29 minutes 3 seconds in winning the Twilight’s Last Gleaming Cross-Country Challenge at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura on Saturday. Patterson broke the mark of 29:06 set by Anne Gladue of Ventura in 1986.

Steven Brown of Ventura won the men’s division for the second consecutive year, finishing in 24:58, the same time as runner-up Stephen Kong of Santa Barbara.

Chuck Cagley of Westlake Village took fifth place in the slalom race of the Skat-Track World Jet Ski finals on Sunday at Lake Havasu City, Ariz.
