NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Bishop Amat, Loyola Battle Will Decide Who Rules Del Rey League

Bishop Amat, ranked No. 1 in The Times’ high school football poll, will play No. 3 Loyola Saturday night at Glendale High in a matchup between unbeaten Del Rey League teams.

Bishop Amat, led by running back Rodney Sermons, has defeated Carson, Damien, Long Beach Poly, Arroyo Grande, Long Beach Jordan, Crespi, St. Paul and St. John Bosco.

Loyola has beaten Hawthorne, Jordan, St. Francis, Antelope Valley, Arcadia, St. John Bosco, Crespi and Alemany.

Bishop Amat concludes the regular season next week against Alemany. Loyola finishes against St. Paul.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s soccer team, champion of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, will play host to the NCAA Division III Far West-North Central regional this weekend in Claremont.

Top-seeded Colorado College (15-1-2) will play St. Olaf of Minnesota (9-6-2) at 11 a.m Saturday.

Second-seeded Claremont (15-2-2) plays Cal Lutheran (14-4-2) at 1 p.m.

Claremont defeated Cal Lutheran, 1-0, in the SCIAC championship game. Claremont’s goal was scored by Pat Gorgue.

The Mt. San Antonio College football team will attempt to move closer to a Mission Conference championship when the Mounties travel Saturday night to Long Beach City College.

Mt. SAC upset previously unbeaten Pasadena City College, 28-10, last week, extending its win streak to seven games. The Mounties, who lost their season opener to Taft, are 7-1 and 7-0 in conference play. They are 2-0 in their division with two games remaining.

Mt. SAC overcame a 10-7 deficit against a Pasadena team that was ranked second in the state and fifth in the nation. The Mounties came back with a 66-yard touchdown pass play from Ryan Merrill to tight end Mike Jones, a one-yard touchdown run by David Tafiti, a 33-yard touchdown pass play from Merrill to Leonard Green and a two-yard run by Green.

Pasadena continues its Mission Conference schedule Saturday against El Camino.

Citrus, a 14-7 winner over Mt. San Jacinto last week, continues its Foothill Conference schedule Saturday against College of the Desert. Former Arroyo High standout D.J. Hoyt gained 180 yards in 42 carries for Citrus against Mt. San Jacinto.

The Cal State Los Angeles women’s cross-country team will be seeking its sixth berth in seven seasons in the NCAA Division II national championships in the Western Regional meet in Portland on Saturday.

Marisol Cossio, Rosa Cazares and Maria Paramo finished second, fifth and sixth in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. finals Saturday at Cal Poly Pomona.

Despite the absence of senior All-American Kim Ojeda, who missed the race because of a sprained ankle, the Golden Eagles totaled 46 points to place second behind 10-time national champion Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (25).

The Cal Poly Pomona men’s team qualified for the regional meet by finishing third in the CCAA championships. Jaime Ortega was the top Bronco finisher, covering the 8-K course in 25 minutes 38 seconds. John Kenfield finished eighth in 25:39.

The Pomona women’s team finished fifth but did not qualify for regional. Rosetta Hunter finished 22nd overall, covering the 5-K course in 20:22.9

Kevin Patterson, interim men’s basketball coach at Cal Poly Pomona, has named Jerry Hernandez and Johnny Brown as assistants for the 1992-93 season.

Patterson became coach of the Broncos when Dave Bollwinkel left to become an assistant at Dayton.

Hernandez comes to Pomona after serving for four years as an assistant at Cerritos College. He has also coached Tustin, Sonora and Paramount high schools.

Brown, a former standout at Manual Arts High who was an All-Western Athletic Conference player at New Mexico in 1986, begins his coaching career after playing in the World Basketball League and in Europe, the Philippines and the Middle East.

Laxmi Poruri, a former Claremont High standout now at Stanford, teamed with Heather Willens to win the doubles title in the Riviera All-American women’s tennis championships last weekend at the Riviera Tennis Club.

Poruri and Willens defeated Marouschka van Dijk and Titia Wilmink of Alabama, 7-5, 3-6, 6-0, in the championship.

Paloma Collantes of Mississippi defeated Poruri in the singles final, 6-7 (7-2), 7-5, 6-0, to win her second consecutive Riviera title.

Dee Andros, athletic director and former football coach at Oregon State, will be the featured speaker Friday at the Pasadena Quarterbacks Club luncheon at Brookside Country Club.

The club, in its 48th year, is open to all with annual dues of $30. Lunch is $10 for members, $12 for guests.

The San Dimas Mountain Rescue Team is sponsoring a benefit golf tournament Friday at Marshall Canyon Golf Course in La Verne.

The tournament is limited to 144 players who will compete in a scramble format.

The $125 entry fee includes green and cart fees, lunch and a banquet dinner.
