HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Top 4 Seeds Win in Water Polo

The top four seeded teams advanced to the semifinals of the San Diego Section 3-A water polo playoffs with victories Tuesday night.

Top-seeded Poway turned back Fallbrook, 18-6, at Monte Vista. The Titans (26-4), who haven’t lost a match in San Diego all season, were paced by the Giulianotti brothers. John had seven goals and James added five. For Fallbrook (13-16), Doug Pearce scored two goals.

Poway led 8-0, and 11-1 en route to victory. On Thursday, the Titans meet No. 4 Monte Vista, 14-10 winners against Mt. Carmel (20-8). Monte Vista improved to 21-3.

At Mt. Miguel, No. 2 Granite Hills was a 19-8 winner over (24-2) vs. Bonita Vista (22-6). Granite Hills (25-2) led 8-4 at the half before pulling away to take a 15-7 lead at the end of the third. Granite Hills’ only losses are to Poway and Long Beach Wilson.

Brandon Bryant and Matt Robbins of Granite Hills had five goals each and teammate Darryl Auston added four for Granite Hills. Goaltender Dave Moore had 21 saves.

Led by Greg Finlay’s six goals and two goals each by Jeff New and Randy Bourke and seven assists by Layne Beaubien, third-seeded Coronado (20-9) had little trouble dispensing with Orange Glen, 16-11. Orange Glen fell to 19-10.

In the 2-A, Valhalla’s Mike Murphy scored the winning goal at 1:07 into double overtime as the Norsemen upset No. 4 Clairemont, 10-9, at El Cajon Valley. For Valhalla (18-11), John Allen had four goals and Brian Remlinger contributed three. Steve Ashton scored five goals and Brian Kraklow had 16 goalie saves for Clairemont (10-14).

Volleyball playoffs

Top-seeded Torrey Pines cruised past fourth-seeded Monte Vista, 15-7, 15-8, 15-5, in semifinal play of the Divison II San Diego Section playoffs. Carey May had eight kills and Nicole Gilbert added four kills and three blocks. The Falcons will meet third-seeded University City in the finals. UC (19-6) pulled a mild upset over second-seeded Grossmont (28-7), 16-14, 6-15, 15-11, 15-9.

In the Division I semifinals, top-seeded Poway easily defeated Orange Glen, 15-5, 15-3, 15-5, although the match lasted more than two hours. Third-seeded San Dieguito (27-8) defeated second-seeded Mira Mesa (25-5), 15-8, 11-15, 16-14, 11-15, 15-11.

In the Division III semifinals, second-seeded USDHS defeated third-seeded Our Lady of Peace, 15-2, 15-7, 15-7. Kathleen Murphy led OLP (18-8) with 10 kills. Top-seeded La Jolla (28-6) defeated West Hills, 15-3, 15-10, 15-10, in the other semifinal.
