COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Kuypers Leads OCC Women Past Santa Barbara

Ricarda Kuypers scored 25 points to help Orange Coast to an 83-63 victory over Santa Barbara in a nonconference women’s basketball game Wednesday at Orange Coast College.

Kuypers, a freshman guard from Germany, was 10 of 17 from the field, including three three-pointers. She also had five assists. Leann Kazmer added 14 points for OCC (3-0).

Santa Barbara (1-1) led, 61-60, with 10 minutes seven seconds left in the game, but OCC scored the 20 unanswered points during to next 10 minutes for an 80-61 lead.

OCC’s run came after Santa Barbara had a 16-point scoring streak in the second half to take a 56-53 lead.

In other nonconference women’s basketball:

Cypress 62, Palomar--Joan Maruer scored 19 points and Tiana Roverson added 14 as Cypress (1-1) snapped a 16-game losing streak dating back to last season. It was the first collegiate victory for Cypress rookie coach Kevin Kiernan.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Orange Coast 87, San Diego Mesa 70--Sophomore forward Jeff Porter had 25 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Orange Coast (1-1). Guard Todd Lowe had 20 as Orange Coast led wire-to-wire. San Diego Mesa is 0-3.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, Riverside 0--Freshman outside hitter Becki Gehlke had 14 kills and seven digs for Golden West in a 15-11, 15-3, 15-4 sweep at Riverside. Golden West, the top-ranked team in the state, is 24-0, 11-0 in conference. Tracy Schriber added 10 kills and Heather Flaherty had 10 digs for the Rustlers. Riverside is 5-10 and 5-6.

Fullerton 3, Cypress 0--Sophomore Sarah Roney had 10 kills in a 15-2, 15-2, 15-6 victory for Fullerton (10-5, 7-4). Cypress is 4-11, 2-10.
