Girls’ basketball fans will have an opportunity to see four outstanding teams when Brea-Olinda plays host to what Ladycats Coach Mark Trakh calls “the Orange County Challenge” on Jan. 8-9.

Two county teams--Brea and Capistrano Valley--will play two schools from outside the area--Fair Oaks Del Campo and Orem (Utah) Mountain View. The first night, Brea faces Mountain View at 6:30 and Capistrano Valley meets Fair Oaks at 8. The next night, the Ladycats play Fair Oaks at 8, after the Mountain View-Capistrano Valley game at 6:30.

The three California teams are ranked among the top 10 in the state by Cal-Hi magazine in a preseason poll. Fair Oaks is No. 3, Brea is No. 5 and Capistrano Valley is No. 7.

“The whole thing behind this is to generate more interest in girls’ basketball in Orange County,” said Trakh, who has coached the Ladycats to three State titles. “It’s going to be one big weekend of basketball.”

Also playing will be Capistrano Valley’s senior guard Angie White, who averaged 15 points last season in helping the Cougars to the South Coast League championship. White has signed to play at UNLV next season.

Two Street & Smith magazine preseason All-American picks lead Fair Oaks and Mountain View, Fair Oaks senior Danielle Viglione, a 5-foot-11 guard, and Reagan Scott, a 6-3 center who is being recruited by Stanford.
