PREP VOLLEYBALL : Bishop Montgomery Wins Division II Final

Miya Malauulu had 34 kills Saturday night to lead Torrance Bishop Montgomery High to its first Southern Section girls’ volleyball championship as the Knights defeated Fullerton Sunny Hills, 12-15, 15-8, 12-15, 15-8, 15-9, in Division II final at Cerritos College.

Rachel Hochgesang, a senior 5-foot-10 outside hitter had 37 kills for Sunny Hills (19-2). Unseeded Sunny Hills blew leads of 6-3 in the fourth game and 8-3 in the fifth as unseeded Bishop Montgomery (16-3) rallied to win.

In other finals Saturday:

Division I: Top-seeded Corona del Mar dominated third-seeded Laguna Beach in a 15-1, 15-13, 15-12 victory.

Division III: Top-ranked Torrance swept all its matches, including the final against South Torrance, 15-12, 15-9, 15-7, to win its first section title. Kim Blankinship had 18 kills for the Tarters.

Division IV: Ojai Nordhoff defeated Atascadero, 15-9, 15-8, 15-4, as Allison Kerr had 11 kills for the top-seeded Rangers. Nordhoff (20-3) won its second title in eight years and fourth in 10.

Division V: Kathleen Bunce had 22 kills and Karen Benovsky 21 to lead Capistrano Valley Christian past L.A. Baptist, 15-13, 15-2, 10-15, 15-12. The Eagles extended their winning streak to 22 matches dating back to last season. Sarah Rameson had 19 kills for second-seeded L.A. Baptist (17-1).

Division VI: Andrea Alary had 16 kills as unseeded Templeton upset second-seeded Carpinteria Cate, 15-13, 2-15, 15-13, 11-15, 15-8. Kim Balfour and Tracye Lawyer had 16 kills each for Cate (17-4).
